The History of Internet Poker
April, 2002
Poker is the world’s most popular card game. It is played
both at home and in professional card rooms and casinos. Like most
American wagering games it was imported from France during the nineteenth
century. While its origins are unknown, it is likely that poker
is a direct descendant from the Persian game of Âs Nas. The
first direct reference to the game of poker was made in New Orleans
around 1830. It spread up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers on steamboats
and to the east via the railroad. It eventually gained infamy among
cowboys and cardsharps on the American western frontier.
The game that spread like wild fire across the Wild West is now
conquering a new frontier, the Internet. In 1998 Planet Poker was
the first online poker room. Shortly afterwards another site, Paradise
Poker, entered the scene. Their good software and customer service
created an industry. Despite the pessimistic prophecies of land-based
operators Paradise grew at an exponential rate. From their launch
in September of 1999 to mid April 2002 Paradise Poker dealt over
177,000,000 hands. A modest average of one-dollar rake per hand
(some analysts think it may be significantly higher) put Paradise’s
earnings at previously unimagined levels.
In late 2000, when Paradise had established itself as the predominant
champion of Internet poker, the skeptics once again spoke their
predictions. This time they said that the online poker clientele
had been saturated and that there was no room for new sites seeking
new players. Despite this negativity new sites proliferated at break
neck speed. New comers like Party Poker, Poker Stars, Ultimate Bet,
and AmericasCardRoom saw a sizable amount of business. Simultaneously,
Paradise continues to hold its share. This indicates a growth in
the number of online card players. Industry analysts estimate about
four to five thousand players grace poker sites every day. Even
the skeptics are holding their tongues this time. It is our estimate
that the poker industry today is where the online casino industry
was four years ago, in its infancy. Only time will tell how this
industry will come into maturity.
The History of Internet Poker (PART 2)
November, 2003
Watching Internet Poker grow has been a very exciting experience
for us. In our first article entitled The History of Poker (above),
written over 18 moths ago, we stated that the Internet poker industry
was in its infancy. We would like to go on record again and proclaim
that Internet Poker has not yet reached maturity. As far as we are
concerned Internet poker is, in comparison to other online industries,
a young adolescent.
We predict that within the next 3-5 years we will see Internet
poker rooms with over 100,000 clients playing at one time. That
is more than five times the current record of 20,000. Advancements
in technology combined with the widespread availability of faster
bandwidth to a wider client base will take this industry to limits
hardly imaginable just a few years ago.
Never the less, the skeptics continue to sing the same tune. The
same people who said 2 years ago that Paradise Poker captured the
market are now saying the same thing today about Party Poker. All
that Paradise and Party have done is raised the bar. Eighteen months
ago one could enter the market with a very reasonable investment.
Party Poker and others such as Poker Stars, Ultimate bet and Ladbrokes
have certainly raised the stakes. Barriers to entry such as sufficient
marketing capital, access to the target audience, and brand recognition
are becoming more difficult to obtain.
However, there are no barriers that cannot be conquered. No one
can predict which unknown name will capture the next significant
share of the market and compete with the big boys. That is why DobroSoft
has made it our mission to help new clients take on the challenges
of what we consider to be one of the most exciting businesses in
the world.
DobroSoft has continued our pursuit of excellence by building new
marketing tools, poker room networks, and new feature rich versions
of our classic poker games. We are here with the right product waiting
for the right company to join us and make it happen. Once again
only time can tell.
